Aaron L. Schwartz - 'Character Actor'
Character Actor. What does that really mean? Is it playing bit roles? Not necessarily. Is it having a funny voice or limp? Not necessarily. It is not a personality actor, who is essentially “the same” from role to role, who seems to always impose who they are on the role. Instead, a character actor will blend intrinsically who they are with the demands of the text, director, story, circumstance, and situation and ultimately create a believable, interesting “character.”
It means the “actor/character” undergoes a transformation. Whatever the given physical type and innate qualities the actor possesses, he or she can maximize the range of the roles, stretch his or her “type” by making any and all necessary physical, vocal, and most importantly, emotional adjustments.
I am a character actor. While there is no escaping “type” to some degree, I have played a wide variety of roles. By and large these roles include: Quirky Sweet Guy, Lovable Loser, Romantic Shy/Nice Guy, Neurotic Nebbish, Pathetic Loser and Happy-go-lucky Psychotic Killer. All the while, my ultimate goal is to make any role I play believable and interesting, however, always serving the vision of director and writer: making the strong actor choices -- but always letting the writer and director be the painters. Hopefully, I can be exactly the color paint they are looking for.
